Financial literacy is often taught in theory but rarely connected to real-world application. Fradel Barber, founder and CEO of The World Changers, is working to change that.
Through a combination of fintech solutions, personalized financial strategies, online courses, and a financial education social network, The World Changers aims to bridge this divide. The organization not only equips individuals with financial knowledge but also provides mentorship, career development, and tools to help them take meaningful steps toward economic security. By blending education with implementation, Barber’s mission is to make financial empowerment more accessible and impactful.
In this interview, she discusses the challenges of financial literacy, the role of technology in education, and how this company is creating lasting change for individuals and communities.
Closing the Financial Literacy Gap with The World Changers
“We begin our conversation with Fradel Barber, founder and CEO of The World Changers, discussing her fintech-driven approach to financial education, the impact of her organization, and the challenges of bridging the financial literacy gap.”
Fradel, what inspired you to establish The World Changers, and how does your fintech approach differentiate from traditional financial education methods?
Barber: “When I was 20, I thought I’d be in graphic or fashion design. I was getting ready for college and looking for a job, but nothing in design was working out. I ended up taking an interview in the financial industry, and it completely changed my life. Over time, I built a successful business, helped thousands of clients, and mentored hundreds of financial professionals.
But as I grew in the industry, I noticed a big gap, especially for middle and upper-middle-income families. They had access to financial education and access to financial products, but no clear connection between the two. People might take a course on managing their money or learn a financial concept for their business, but they’re often left wondering, ‘What now? How do I actually apply this?’ On the other side, financial products like 401(k)s, insurance policies, and bank services are available, but they don’t come with the personalized guidance people need to make them work for their unique situation.
That’s why I started The World Changers. I wanted to create a platform that not only teaches people about money but also helps them take real steps to apply what they learn in a way that fits their life. Unlike most in our industry who only want to service high-income and high-net-worth clients, our goal is to serve hardworking people and business owners who may not fit into that top 1% but still deserve access to personalized financial solutions.
Our fintech approach helps bridge this gap. With tools like online courses, personalized guidance, and automated investment platforms, we make it easier for people to learn, get access, and take action. And we’re just getting started—there’s a lot more in the pipeline to equip people to take control of their financial future.”
Can you share specific examples of how The World Changers has positively impacted individuals or communities through its financial education programs?
“One example of how we’ve made an impact is when Ms. Teel, a client who worked for a major pharmaceutical company, Novartis, asked us to help during a tough time. The company was closing one of its plants, which she managed, meaning 250 employees were losing their jobs. We provided both in-person and virtual financial education workshops to help these employees prepare for the transition.
After the workshops, we offered one-on-one financial needs analyses to guide each person. We helped them replace the life insurance they were losing, roll over their 401(k)s into secure retirement plans, and feel more confident about their future. On top of that, we introduced our platform for developing financial professionals as a new career option for those looking for a way to transition into a new field. It was a powerful way to support both the company and the employees during a difficult time.
Another story that stands out is Curtis, a client who had worked for 30 years and thought he’d never be able to retire. When we sat down with him, we created a strategy that gave him guaranteed income for life. He went from feeling hopeless to feeling secure and excited about his retirement. He said he finally felt at peace, knowing his retirement was taken care of.
By helping individuals, companies, and communities, we are also making a global impact. Every time someone completes one of our courses or implements a financial strategy, we give back. We support causes like providing clean water, feeding families, or funding education for children. It’s our way of multiplying the impact—helping people with their finances while also contributing to the greater good around the world
Overcoming Financial Literacy Challenges
In your experience, what are the most significant challenges people face in achieving financial literacy, and how does your organization address these obstacles?
“One of the biggest challenges people face, especially in the middle to upper-middle markets, is knowing what financial advice to trust. There’s so much information out there, especially on platforms like TikTok, where advice is often given by people without proper qualifications. This can leave individuals feeling confused or unsure about what actually applies to their situation.
At The World Changers, we tackle this by providing a membership community through our financial education social network app. This platform connects individuals who want to improve their finances with qualified financial professionals. These professionals offer courses, answer questions, and provide personal guidance tailored to each person’s unique circumstances.
The problem with generic advice, like what you often find on TikTok, is that it’s not personalized. Even if it’s good advice, people are often left wondering how to apply it to their own lives. That’s where we step in. We provide the education, the personalized plan, and the support to help individuals take action. Our goal is to make financial literacy accessible and actionable for everyone.”
What role do you see technology playing in the future of financial education, and how is The World Changers adapting to these trends?
“Technology is going to play a huge role in the future of financial education, especially in delivering personalized information that’s relevant to each individual. We’re embracing this by developing individualized financial literacy tracks within our financial education social app. These tracks will be tailored to each member based on their specific needs, making the learning experience more focused and meaningful.
This approach represents the future of financial education—providing information that isn’t just general, but directly applicable to the person consuming it. However, the real game-changer isn’t just in learning; it’s in taking action.
That’s where The World Changers stands out. We take what members learn and provide personalized recommendations so they can apply that knowledge in their real lives. It’s about going beyond education to implementation, ensuring our members see real results in their financial journey.”
Expanding Financial Education and Measuring Success
Can you elaborate on the specific services and programs that The World Changers offers to promote financial education and empowerment?
The World Changers offers a wide range of services and programs to promote financialeducation and empowerment:
- On-Demand Courses and Live Events: We provide courses, seminars, and workshops designed to make financial concepts easy to understand. Topics include budgeting, investing, insurance, estate planning, and retirement planning.
- Personalized Financial Strategies: We do a financial needs analysis and help set financial goals, creating customized plans to guide individuals toward their objectives. We then assist in implementing strategies, including insurance protection, retirement planning, estate planning, business solutions, and more
- Do-It-Yourself Investing: We offer self-service tools and strategies to equip individuals to set up and manage their own investment portfolios
- Community Engagement: Through our financial education social network app, TWC Network, members connect with a supportive community and qualified financial professionals. They gain knowledge, share experiences, and strengthen their financial literacy.”
How do you measure the success of the programs, and what metrics indicate real progress in financial literacy?
Barber: “We measure the success of The World Changers’ programs by the real, tangible changes people make in their finances. For us, success isn’t just about how much knowledge someone gains—it’s about what they do with that knowledge. We believe that if you change your finances, you change your world.
So, we focus on tracking the difference between where someone started and where they are after going through one of our courses, a financial needs analysis, or an implementation plan.
The key metric for us is action. Did they take the steps to improve their financial situation? Did they create a budget, secure proper insurance, or plan for retirement in a way they hadn’t before? If someone simply consumes the information but doesn’t apply it, that’s not real progress to us. We’re looking for change because that’s the true sign of financial literacy—knowledge put into action.”
Financial Literacy for Underserved Communities
In what ways does The World Changers focus on underserved or marginalized communities, and how do you plan to expand access to financial education for these groups?
“The World Changers focuses on serving the underserved and overlooked segments of the population, particularly the upper-middle market and minority communities. In the financial industry, traditional institutions often prioritize high-net-worth individuals, while lower-income groups are supported by government programs. This leaves professionals, families, and small to medium-sized business owners in the middle underserved. They make good money but don’t qualify for high-end financial services, nor do they receive government aid.
Additionally, minority communities, such as Black and Latino populations, face even greater gaps in financial education and resources. We make it a priority to not only educate these communities but also help implement what they learn to create lasting generational change.
To expand access, we focus on training and developing financial professionals from these communities. These professionals understand the unique challenges their communities face and are able to elevate the areas they come from. For example, Ariel, a financial professional from the Latino community in Washington Heights, NY, was recognized by the NY State Assembly for his impactful work in his community.
By empowering people from underserved groups to become financial professionals, we not only help individuals but also create a ripple effect that lifts entire communities. This is how we bridge the gaps in financial education and ensure lasting, meaningful change.”
As we conclude, I have one final question: What advice would you offer to fintech professionals in Miami seeking to make a meaningful impact in their field?
Barber: “My advice to fintech professionals in Miami is to focus on aligning with a platform or organization that shares your values. While financial success is important, the values you stand for and the impact you want to make are just as—if not more—important.
Choose a path that allows you to create meaningful change, whether it’s helping underserved communities, improving financial literacy, or introducing innovative solutions. When your work is driven by purpose and values, the results are far more fulfilling, and the impact you make will resonate deeply with the people you serve.
Stay true to your mission, and the success will follow—not just financially, but in the legacy you create.”
