Miami Tech Works: Empowering Workforce Development for a Stronger, More Inclusive Economy

In 2022, the Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Good Jobs Challenge sparked the launch of Miami Tech Works, an initiative aimed at helping underserved communities gain the skills needed for stable, high-paying jobs. By enhancing workforce training systems and creating sector partnerships, the project provides valuable opportunities for re-skilling and up-skilling, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for Miami.

A good job is more than just a paycheck. It’s a cornerstone of an equitable economy, benefiting not only workers and their families but also businesses and the broader U.S. economy. Good jobs provide workers with stability, security, and opportunities to thrive. Companies also understand that offering quality jobs is key to staying competitive. By attracting and retaining top talent, they drive better performance and successfully fulfill their business missions.

What defines a good job?

To help define what constitutes a good job, the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Labor identified eight core principles that guide workforce development:

1. Recruitment and Hiring: Actively recruiting qualified applicants, particularly from underserved communities, with minimal barriers like unnecessary educational requirements.
2. Benefits: Offering family-sustaining benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave, fostering economic mobility for workers.
3. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA): Ensuring all workers have equal opportunities, free from discrimination and bias.
4. Empowerment and Representation: Enabling workers to join unions and have a voice in decisions that impact their work and organizational direction.
5. Job Security and Working Conditions: Providing safe, healthy work environments with job security and predictable schedules.
6. Organizational Culture: Cultivating a culture where all workers feel valued, respected, and included by leadership and peers.
7. Pay: Offering fair, predictable living wages, with opportunities for increases based on skill and experience.
8. Skills and Career Advancement: Ensuring workers have access to training and clear pathways for career growth.

These principles are central to the mission of Miami Tech Works, which strives to provide the tools and resources needed to build a thriving, skilled workforce in the region.

Miami Tech Works: Formation of the Tech Talent Coalition

In February 2023, Miami Tech Works launched the Tech Talent Coalition, an innovative collaboration between employers, academia, and community organizations. The Coalition’s goal is to bridge the gap between tech talent and the growing demand for skilled workers in Miami’s thriving tech ecosystem.

The Coalition consists of four dedicated working groups that address critical areas of talent development:

1. Emerging Tech Talent: Focusing on developing skills for the latest technological advancements.
2. Tech Skills Gap: Tackling the shortage of skilled workers in key tech fields.
3. Inclusive Tech Talent Pipeline: Ensuring that tech opportunities are accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
4. Small Business Capacity Building: Strengthening the ability of small businesses to tap into and grow Miami’s tech talent pool.

These working groups meet bi-monthly, both in person and virtually, and have become an essential resource for connecting local talent with companies in the region. This initiative is transforming Miami into a tech talent hub, helping fill the talent gap while empowering local communities.

A Collaborative Effort for a Stronger Workforce Ecosystem

As one of the key members of the Tech Talent Coalition, Arijana Koskarova, founder of Creative Hub Miami, a tech bootcamp school, emphasizes the collaborative nature of the initiative.

“As a member of the Tech Talent Coalition, I must say that the entire team of Miami Tech Works is committed to job placement for local talent and building the largest network of participating companies. The Coalition is covering all the aspects of what a workforce ecosystem should look like: academia, talent, and companies,” Koskarova said.

Through Miami Tech Works, the city is making significant strides toward building a strong, sustainable workforce- one that will not only meet the demands of today’s tech-driven economy but also ensure that the benefits of economic growth are widely shared.
